Employers are struggling to find effective programs that keep healthy workers on the job because unscheduled absenteeism can cost large companies an estimated $850,000 per year. Many are turning to paid time off or PTO banks to solve the problem.

WorldatWork Comment to SEC: Proposed Rule Could Have Unintended Effects
Survey Highlights Potential Problems
Beware of unintended consequences, WorldatWork warned in a letter to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filed on Monday, Oct. 23. WorldatWork responded to a request for comment from the SEC on a proposed amendment that would require the disclosure of compensation for three additional non-executive most highly compensated employees.
Speaking on behalf of its members, WorldatWork takes exception to the proposal for two primary reasons:
1. The new disclosures will cause unintended consequences for companies competing to attract, motivate and retain employees -- including a potential further ratcheting up of compensation levels, and
2. The burden — as much as $38 million per year over the three-year period — imposed by the new disclosures does not seem to add commensurate and meaningful shareholder and investor informational value.

"Communication and education is key to the successful implementation of HSAs. These savings vehicles may offer organizations a cost-effective mechanism to achieve health care cost containment and offer employees more choice," said Lenny Sanicola, CBP, WorldatWork benefits practice leader.

Work and Family Month Underscores Importance of Work-Life Effectiveness
"Reducing the conflict between work and family life should be a national priority."
- Senate Resolution 210, passed unanimously, September 5, 2003.
October 4, 2006 -- Scottsdale, Ariz.-- The growing need to achieve work-life effectiveness has become a public concern on the national level. Pressures on employees to meet increasing demands at home and at work directly impact employers. Rising absenteeism, increasing health care costs, and higher rates of employee turnover ultimately result in lower productivity, lower employee morale, and decreasing company profits. That's why the U.S. Senate voted unanimously in 2003 to declare October National Work and Family Month.

WorldatWork Comment to SEC: For Clarity Sake, Split Proposed Table into "Earned" Compensation and "Potential" Compensation
WorldatWork provided a comment to U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday regarding the proposed rules that would amend proxy disclosure requirements for executive and director compensation, among other things.
WorldatWork supports full accountability of compensation committee decisions and, as such, advocates for continued furnishing of the report over the signed names of the compensation committee. The Association also supports adding the CEO and CFO as signatories to the furnished report.
WorldatWork believes that going to the next step of converting the document from "furnished" to one that is "filed" -- thereby causing it to become subject to CEO and CFO Sarbanes-Oxley certification is misguided because current NYSE and NASDAQ governance rules prohibit the CEO and CFO to be present when their compensation is discussed. As such, this new requirement would create a conflict. In addition, requiring the report to be "filed" would create potential liability for the non-compensation committee directors -- similarly creating an incentive for them to intrude into the autonomy of the compensation committee's work.
