WVHEPC
Setting New Standards In West Virginia Universities and Colleges.

When it was time to update old HR practices and procedures at West Virginia’s higher learning institutions, Senator Robert Plymale, Chair of the Legislative Oversight Commission on Education and Accountability, passed a bill directing the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission (WVHEPC) to study eight components of the human resources structure. In designing a leading classification and compensation system, Vice Chancellor Dennis Taylor of WVHEPC turned to the WorldatWork onsite education program.

According to Nichelle Perkins, Commission Project Coordinator, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission’s goal is to build accountability and trust between Human Resources and university and college staff, by updating current HR practices and solving outstanding classification and compensation issues.

WVHEPC turned to WorldatWork for assistance in redefining Human Resources “best practices,” and for onsite education.  “We partnered with WorldatWork to bridge the gap in education and to promote certification. We needed to find a way to change the system and maintain it over the long term.”

Vice Chancellor Dennis Taylor, leader of the study, garnered the necessary funding and asked both HR professionals and university and college staff to work together and become part of the solution, with good results. This arrangement has “built a lot of goodwill. We’ve spent seven months together—we are one big team,” says Perkins. Both human resources staff and classified staff will be certified through this process.

With WorldatWork education as a guide, the commission is building HR standards and procedures that will be in place for years to come.  “It’s not just a class for us…we’re using WorldatWork terminology and definitions,” she says, “WorldatWork is our cornerstone.”
